Friday After 5 signing up PreUnions, vendors, interns

Friday After 5 Welcomes Class Pre-Unions, Food trucks and Interns

Friday After 5, the popular 16-week summer festival with free music on four to five stages each Friday night, will announce its 2019 lineup on April 17th.

And Teresa Thomas, the festival’s executive director, says it’s time for high school and college reunions to start signing up for “PreUnions” at the event that draws thousands of people to the riverfront each weekend during the summer.

The 23rd annual event starts May 17 and runs through Aug. 30.

It’s also time for college students to start signing up for internships that qualify for credit.

And, Thomas said, it’s time for street vendors to start signing up for space.

“We had 12 food trucks last summer,” she said. “We’d like to add another six or seven trucks this year. We would like to grow the street fair to stretch from the RiverPark Center all the way to Frederica.”

That’s three blocks of Veterans Boulevard.

PreUnions are scheduled at Friday After 5 on the nights before the reunions on Saturday.

“I think we had 32 last year,” Thomas said. “We can handle four or five each at the RiverPark Center and the Owensboro Convention Center. But people need to sign up early to make sure there is still space available on the night they want.”

There is no charge for PreUnions, she said.

Friday After 5 even provides a pre-registration table and chairs, Thomas said.

“PreUnions get bigger and bigger every year,” she said. “Sometimes, there are several hundred people at them. Sometimes, the whole front foyer of the RiverPark Center is packed.”

Thomas said last year Friday After 5 reached out to college students who were looking for a summer internship.

“It’s unpaid,” she said. “But they can get college credit. It’s good for people in marketing and event planning. It gives them a chance to get involved with the community.”

Last year, Friday After 5 estimated that slightly more than 67,500 attended the summer-long event.

Thomas said, “We’re already working on plans for our 25th season” in 2021.
