jay mcelwain
Born and raised in Muhlenberg County, Jay McElwain has been writing songs for 35 years. He has spent the last twenty-seven of those years in the education field, employed as a high school Agriculture teacher in Muhlenberg County. As a result, his songwriting and performing have primarily been hobbies. However, his approach to his songwriting is much more serious than that of a hobby. Inspired by many of the great lyricists of the past, Jay incorporates the various styles of writing used by his songwriting idols into his own original works. Most of his songs create storylines around characters dealing with everyday life, while all are intended to evoke an emotional response from the listener. Some are drawn from Jay’s own personal experiences, yet many are simply creations of his imagination. In his songs, you will hear traces of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Mickey Newbury, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, and many others. In addition to his original works, Jay also performs various covers from country, rock, pop, and other genres.
